Friday, June 19. 2009American/Asian Closing and Remembrance Art Workshop!
On Saturday June 27th, ArtXchange invites you to join us for the final day of American/Asian: A Tale of New Cultures. Mingle with the artists, view the show, and participate in History, Healing, Hope, an educational art-making workshop created by Judy Shintani (currently exhibiting in American/Asian) and Legacies of War. No art-making experience is necessary! This event is FREE and open to the public.
History, Healing and Hope through Art
This community-driven workshop will allow participants to create personal art around their past and present stories to add to a large “Memory Tree” installation that Judy will create from the community pieces. The resulting “Memory Tree” will be featured in Legacies’ “Our Shared Journey” traveling exhibit. No art experience is necessary to participate! Art-makers are invited to bring photocopied images of friends, family and meaningful places. All other materials will be provided at the event. Legacies of War was founded in 2004 to educate and advocate for the removal of unexploded bombs in Laos, to provide space for healing the wounds of war and to create greater hope for a future of peace. The organization uses art, culture, education, community organizing and dialogue to bring people together and create healing and transformation out of the wreckage of war.
Artist Judy Shintani creates art as a way to communicate and a process for healing. In Judy’s statement and workshop, she will explore how art can be a powerful force in expressing history and personal experiences. She will also discuss ways art is a vehicle to honor and remember events and people important to us. Using found objects and other materials, Shintani creates environments which often invite the audience to participate and immerse themselves in art. Trackbacks
